Children of Choice

I was raised in a foster home.  My foster parents and their children did not owe me a thing after I grew up and moved out of their home.  Mom and Dad Carey continue to treat me like one of their own and so did one of my foster brothers.  They owed me nothing.  If the truth be told I owed them everything.  Because from them I received everything that was good in my life.

My work ethic

Study habits

My love for music

My commitment to my wife that I saw modelled in Dad Carey

My faith I learn from all of them

Every good trait in my life I credit them with.  They truly did not owe me anything.  Yet they choose to give me a place in their hearts and their lives.  I would often tease Mom Carey with I am your only son who did not give you stretch marks.

I know what it is to be loved by others for no good reason except that they choose to love you.  It is humbling and amazing all at the same time.  John 1 talks about how we become the children of God.

1: 13 They did not become his children in any human way—by any human parents or human desire. They were born of God.

God chooses us!  He chooses us even when we reject him.

He chooses us even when we don’t believe he is real

He chooses us when we disobey all he wants us to do.

He chooses us when we curse his name and blame him for all the things we screw up

He chooses us when we blame him for staying out of our business and it falls apart.

He chooses us when we say How could a loving God allow

children to die

famine to happen

mud slides

forest fires

He chooses us!  He loves us and by his power we are his children.  I don’t have to be good or brave or perfect I simply need to say I take whatever you want to give me.

This week we will unpack the power of this statement I hope you will join me Sunday at 10:30 at the Spectator.
