Fear to Fearless

Fear is often rooted in the unknown.  I was afraid of alleys at night as a child.  They were dark and I could not see what was down the lane.  Even into my 20’s I did not like going by the opening of an alley.  Then I moved to another city where alleys did not exist.  So I forgot all about my fear.  I live in a city where there are no alleys where I live there are some in the old part of the city but I don’t go there at night.  I hope I have outgrown this fear.

Other fears have entered my life!

I fear falling

I fear being forgotten

I fear being left alone, my spouse dying suddenly

I also fear not having enough money for retirement.

My fears reflect how old I am which is very old to some and not very old to my friends who are in their 90’s.  Some of you who are much younger fear

not finding a spouse

not having  a baby

not being a good parent

not being able to pass the exams

not getting a good job

not being able to afford to buy a house or take a good vacation

Each year our fears change as we move through life or through the decades.  Left uncheck they can dominate our lives and cripple us.  They can destroy our relationship, take away our happiness, and endanger our lives.

Putting your trust in God is the remedy to fear.  Psalm 27 starts with:

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?

I hope you will join us for worship this Sunday at the Hamilton Spectator and if you live far away please listen the the message when it has been posted.  May you experience God’s salvation and his protection this week.
