Idols

Idols

Drake just cleaned up at the music awards and he is a Canadian.  He calls on us to work until our idols become our revivals.  Work hard until you become equal with those who you worship.

Become as good at song writing and singing as Drake and then he will be your revival.

Work very hard at playing hockey so that Connor McDavid becomes not just someone who you worship but he is your revival.

With hard work we can become the equal of those who we worship.

I worshipped Wilt Chamberlain who was 7 feet 2 inches tall.  No amount of work was every going to change the fact that I was 5 feet 10.5 inches tall.  This was never going to happen.

I love to be equal to Bob Dylan he is a great poet and song writer but I am tone death and can’t sing at all which is the only thing that I may do better than Bob.  I am a worse singer than he is.

Drake is right about my wanting too be equal to my idols.  They are my idols because they can do something that I really want to be able to do.  I want what they have.

I also sometimes worship the things that I think I can control.  I think I can control my success or failure or my physical fitness, or my children, my spouse and a whole host of other really good things that I want to make better because they do what I want them to do.  Once they are made in my image I can then say to the  world see I did it.

Jonah 2:8 says  “Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.”  The very things that I want to control so that God will be please with me are the things that turn me from God’s love.  The power of the idol is that it takes the place of God.  It blinds me to the love that only God can give me that I so much want to have.

Spiritual formation happens as we wrestle with the idols that we know we have and the idols that we don’t realize are our idols until they get taken away from us.  Only when we loose something do we realize who we have worship it and can’t live without it.

Idols keep us from the love of God.  Idols blind us to our own selfishness.  Idols look just like us and in fact we worship self far more than thing else in life.

Give up those idols so you can know the love of God.
