Prayer: An everyday Event

I try to brush my teeth, every day but don’t always do it.  That does not mean my teeth will fall out.  In fact my teeth are really resilient.

I shower almost everyday but on those days that I don’t no one tells me to my face that I have body odour.  I hope that is because I don’t have body odour.

Most of the time I drive the speed limit.  Those times that I go over I rarely get caught.  That does not mean it did not happen.

My point is that I pray a lot but there are times that I forget to pray.  Times when life is just moving so fast that I just don’t have time to pray.  God does not dump me or send down thunder bolts to remind me.

In life I get tired of praying and take a day off sometimes two days off.  I don’t know what to say so I say nothing.  God does not leave me.

There are days that the pain of being a pastor is so great that I am just ticked off at God and don’t even want to think about him.  He knows my heart and he waits for me to come back.

How do I know that this is all true?

I know it is true because I read the bible which shows me how many times the hero’s of the faith failed to live up to my expectations of what it means to be a hero.  I thought David was this great amazing man when it truth he is a constant failure.  I thought that Abraham was a giant of a man of faith when it fact he was human and scared and took the easy way out every time.

The bible, the more I read it contains the stories of people just like me.  People who start well and fall flat on their faces.  People who are arrogant and proud and strong headed and don’t tell me the facts because my mind is made up kind of people.  The bible tells the truth about humanity.

The bible also tells the truth about God.  Who he is.  How faithful he is.  How loving he is.  How patient he is.  How amazing merciful he is.

The God of the Bible never give up on me he never stops loving me.  Once I understand this then faith begins to grow and prayer is a joy.

I have been studying prayer on YOUVERSION with Timothy Keller.  My eyes were open to prayers purpose when I read:

“Without immersion in God’s words, our prayers may not be merely limited and shallow but also untethered from reality.  We may be responding not to the real God but to what we wish God and life to be like.  Indeed, if left to themselves our hearts will tend to create a God who doesn’t exist.”

The purpose of prayer is to know God!

Praying to a God who does not exist is a waste of time and effort.  I want to encourage you to get to know the God of the bible. He is everything you need and once you know him your prayer life will be productive and fruitful.

I highly recommend YOUVERSION to any who are looking for a devotional program that is varied and challenging.
